Addiction Definition :

The term "addiction" describes a compulsive act which causes harm to the person and those around them and over which the person no longer has control.

Addiction is both psychological and behavioral. Addictions are characterized by craving, compulsion, an inability to stop using the drug and lifestyle dysfunction due to drug use.

Behavioral addictions are those not involving a substance. This type of addiction can be an impulse control disorder as defined in the DSM-IV-TR

It has been suggested one of the types of addictions is behavioral addiction. The following is a list of behaviors that have been noted to be addictive.

Love addiction & Love De-addiction MSK Therapy :

Love addiction is a proposed model of pathological passion-related behavior involving the feeling of being in love.The symptoms of love addiction are largely focused around unhealthy dependency within relationships. These include, self-neglect and distorted thoughts, feelings and behaviour around love and fantasies and relationships. This means most love addicts fall in love very quickly but have a hard time coping with a long term relationship. Once the initial attraction fades and the honeymoon period is over, love addicts quickly lose interest and begin neglecting their relationship.

Psychosocial Therapy : It’s an ongoing process during the process, it helps to identify ones strengths and weakness and address it with the guidance of a mind consultant.Cognitive behavioral therapy, family counseling, and other therapy approaches can help people recovering from opioid addiction stay clean.

Comprehensive De-addiction Services :

Pre-admission Counselling : This will help the addict to identify his problems, accept it and the need to undergo the treatment. This also prepares the addict mentally for the transition period.

Management of withdrawal symptoms : During first few days of detoxification, the patient may undergo the withdrawal period. The severity of withdrawal symptoms depends on person to person, types of drugs used and period of abused.

Behavior Change Communication :

This involves providing information/knowledge, building awareness and changing attitude and behavior for healthy & safer choices in life.

Community Therapy :

It essentially teaches empathize and expressing ones feelings and emotions appropriately. This shall equip the person with better interpersonal relationship and communication skills and thereby will have better adjustments with community and society.

Family Therapy :

In most of the cases the immediate family members will also be in distress due to the tremendous social, economic and psychological pressure. The family counseling sessions enables the family members to better understand the situation, cope up with that and act appropriately.

    Drink refusal skills are imparted to persons willing to abstain from alcohol as to how confidently but assertively refuse to budge for the social pressure to drink alcohol and not feel guilty about the refusal.
    This skill helps the person to manage problems which disturb his/her resolve to abstain from alcohol dependency of the alcohol when ever encountered with problem. But this skill is refined and reinforced mostly during relapse prevention and post discharge period.
    Expressing one's feelings both pleasure and displeasure is a skill very important for a harmonious social living. For some assertively expressing their displeasure and discomfort itself can create anxiety, frustration and anger. If they are not able to manage this side effect of lack of assertive skills it can lead to harmful drinking behavior take drugs.
    Tension can be physical, mental or psychosocial. Tension can be a predisposing factor in some for drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Hence if the issues leading to tension and skills to manage tension if not addressed can be a factor for relapse. Alcohol and Drug De-addition and rehabilitation program are taught relaxation techniques both conventional like deep muscle relaxation, relaxation imagery and those derived from Yoga to manage stress appropriately.
    Alcohol and Drug De-addition and rehabilitation engage residents for behavioralself-management( especially those who Join for Harm Reduction Wellness program) for those who wish to cut down the amount of alcohol rather than stopping. Behavioralself-management includes :

Follow up by Telephone Calls/ House/workplace visits (at local): As a part of the after care services, the d patients are encouraged to keep in touch in person or with help of communication tools. In case of need, the counselors visit the homes/workplaces.
